Mazanie po murach? Spotkanie wokół wystawy „Krew miasta”

Place of the event: ul. Marii Skłodowskiej-Curie 11, 90-505 Łódź
When: 20 February 2024 (Tuesday) 18:00 - 20:00

A discussion around "Krew miasta" [Blood of the City] – the exhibition of photography by Piotr Stachlewski (the Strzemiński Academy of Fine Arts in Łódź), who for years has been recording a city filled with graffiti by football fans, will take place on Tuesday (20 February) at 6:00 p.m. at the university gallery Wozownia 11 (M. Skłodowskiej-Curie). What do the entries on the walls documented by the artist prove? Can we talk about fan anti-Semitism without Jews? How should symbolic violence be counteracted in the public space of multicultural Lodz? The discussion will be attended by: Dr Joanna Podolska-Płocka (The Marek Edelman Dialogue Center in Łódź / University of Lodz), Prof. Wojciech Woźniak (sports sociologist from the University of Lodz), Prof. Marek Domański (the curator, the Strzemiński Academy of Fine Arts in Łódź) and the author of the exhibition.

Piotr Stachlewski, a successful painter, turned to photography and consistently, for many years, has been recording hundreds of views of the city, dominated by graffiti made by RTS and ŁKS fans.

These photographs, which only seem to be quotations from reality, record excruciating violence and helplessness. People performing these acts of visual vandalism are probably fulfilling their need for agency that they cannot fulfil n a more creative way

– explains Marek Domański, the exhibition curator.

Hatred on the walls is expressed by the expression of the letters, the structure of the entire inscription, and the vulgarity of comparisons. The text on the wall is intended to insult, mock and compare it to what is the worst for the "fan’s" mentality

– adds Piotr Stachlewski.

Many people understate the importance of such inscriptions and drawings. They claim that such anti-Semitism without Jews (no more than 15,000 people in a country of 40 million people declare Jewish identity) is meaningless, and the inscriptions and slogans of this type are not harmful, since they do not concern "true" followers of Judaism or citizens of Israel. It's not true

– explains Prof. Wojciech Woźniak.

The meeting will be led by Dr Bartosz Kałużny (Communications and PR Centre, University of Lodz).
