The Congress of Deans of Chemistry Faculties will be held at the Lodz University of Technology and the University of Lodz on 1-2 February 2024. Lodz will host over a hundred representatives of Polish universities, as well as representatives of institutions important to our environment – the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, the Council for Scientific Excellence, the Polish Accreditation Committee and the Polish Chemical Society.

The two-day meeting will be devoted to management, finance, cooperation with the socio-economic environment and the education of students at the faculties that are among the most renowned at Polish universities.

Prof. Małgorzata I. Szynkowska-Jóźwik, Dean of the Faculty of Chemistry, Lodz University of Technology:

Our Congress is a key meeting for the authorities of chemical faculties. Thanks to the meeting, discussions about effective faculty management and prospects for scientific and didactic development will be substantive and measurable. Thanks to the co-organisation of the event by the University of Lodz and the Lodz University of Technology, the meeting will also be a good forum to present and popularise the idea of the Lodz Academic Partnership.

On the first day of the Congress, guests will meet in the "Alchemium – the magic of chemistry of tomorrow" building, the seat of the Faculty of Chemistry of the Lodz University of Technology. They will be welcomed by Prof. Dr hab. inż. Krzysztof Jóźwik – Rector of the Lodz University of Technology and Prof. Małgorzata Szynkowska-Jóźwik – Dean of the Faculty of Chemistry at the Lodz University of Technology as well as Prof. Sławomira Skrzypek – Dean of the Faculty of Chemistry at the University of Lodz.

The meeting will be inaugurated with a lecture by Prof. Tomasz Pospieszny from the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, entitled "Radowa gorączka. Historia pewnego odkrycia" [Radium fever. The story of a discovery].

On the second day of the Congress, guests will be welcomed at the Training and Conference Centre of the University of Lodz by Prof. Dr hab. Elżbieta Żądzińska – Rector of the University of Lodz. The discussions will begin with a panel discussion: "Quo vadis szkolnictwo wyższe?" [Quo vadis higher education?] with the participation of the Rectors of the University of Lodz and the Lodz University of Technology – Prof. Elżbieta Żądzińska and Prof. Krzysztof Jóźwik as well as Prof. Teofil Jesionowski – Rector of the Poznan University of Technology, Chairperson of the Conference of Rectors of Polish Technical Universities.

The meeting will be moderated by Prof. Łukasz Albrecht, Vice-Rector for Science at the Lodz University of Technology.

Prof. Dr hab. Sławomira Skrzypek – Dean of the Faculty of Chemistry at the University of Lodz:

We feel convinced that such a distinguished group of panellists will indicate a model of modern university management that can be implemented in the current socio-economic situation, based on the development of innovative research and technologies that are highly useful for the country. For years, meetings of Deans of Chemistry Faculties have been a forum for open, often difficult discussions about new challenges facing universities in a changing world.

The Congress organisers also invited Jarosław Oliwa – Head of the Department of Budget and Finance of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, who titled his speech: "Mój wydział uzyskał kategorię A+. Ministrze, gdzie są moje pieniądze?" [My faculty received A+ category. Minister, where is my money?].

Due to the next evaluation of scientific disciplines awaiting universities, Dr hab. Rafał Stanisławski, Associate Professor at the Opole University of Technology, Chairperson of the Science Evaluation Committee Team for lists of publications of scientific monographs, scientific journals and reviewed materials from international conferences was invited to the discussion.

Representatives of the Council for Scientific Excellence will talk about staff development opportunities and scientific promotions:

  • Prof. Grażyna Stochel from the Jagiellonian University
  • Prof. Paweł Kulesza from the University of Warsaw
  • Prof. Marcin Hoffmann from the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań.

The topic of technology in the area of water, hydrogen and coal, which has been widely discussed in the scientific and business community, will also be addressed. This vision of the future will be discussed by: Dr hab. inż. Łukasz Klapiszewski, Associate Professor at the Poznan University of Technology and Łukasz Maciejewski from Bank Gospodarstwa Krajowego, manager for cooperation with universities. The topic of their speech is "3W (woda, wodór, węgiel) – od idei do realizacji" [3W (water, hydrogen, carbon) – from an idea to the implementation].

Faculties of Chemistry, trying to encourage young people to study chemistry, follow changes in the labour market and young people's expectations related to their education. These topics will be discussed in the didactic panel "Umiejętności studenta w szybko zmieniającej się rzeczywistości" [Student's skills in a rapidly changing reality], moderated by Dr hab. Robert Zakrzewski, Associate Professor – the University of Lodz Vice-Rector for Student Affairs and Quality of Education.

During the discussion about education led by Prof. Piotr Młynarz – Dean of the Faculty of Chemistry of the Wrocław University of Science and Technology, the participants of the Congress will also try to answer the question: "Rekrutacja – co się dzieje?" [Recruitment – what is happening?] and discuss new strategies for promoting chemical sciences among school youth. One of the forms of chemistry promotion is the "Chemkaton" competition, organised by the AGH University of Krakow, information about which will be provided by Dr hab. inż. Marek Jaszczur, Associate Professor – Vice-Dean for Education at the Faculty of Energy and Fuels, AGH.

"Kilka słów o Polskim Towarzystwie Chemicznym" [A few words about the Polish Chemical Society], its statutory goals and activities for the benefit of the community of Polish chemists and the development of young scientists will be presented by its President – Prof. Izabela Nowak from the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań.
