Prof. Mariusz Sokołowicz kierownikiem interdyscyplinarnego projektu IDUB

Dr hab. Mariusz Sokołowicz, Associate Professor at the University of Lodz from the Department of Regional Economics and Environment will manage the project entitled: "Rezyliencja miast wobec wyzwań cywilizacyjnych i celów zrównoważonego rozwoju: operacjonalizacja, pomiar i upowszechnianie koncepcji" [Resilience of cities in the face of civilisation challenges and sustainable development goals: operationalisation, measurement and dissemination of the concept]. The project will be carried out together with colleagues from the University of Lodz thanks to the funding granted as part of the IDUB "Interdisciplinary Research Grants" competition.

The aim of the project

The goal of the project is to develop an urban resilience index based on available data – for the purposes of developing urban research and promoting the issue of urban resilience among local decision-makers and communities. The 44 largest Polish cities, for which the first step has already been taken and MPAs, i.e. urban adaptation plans, were developed in 2017, and which are already taking important actions to adapt to climate change will constitute the test area for this tool.

What is the title resilience?

More and more people live in cities. They constitute the basis for the well-being and safety of their residents, as well as constitute a cause of civilization threats. Their complexity requires new, more advanced approaches to examining urban development. The impact of cities on climate change and the quality of life of their residents is a particularly sensitive issue. Cities are exposed to the risk of unexpected natural and anthropogenic events, such as floods, hurricanes, fires but also economic, political and humanitarian crises. Resilience means the ability to respond to these events, the ability to limit their negative effects while they occur, and the speed of recovery from these types of crises once they occur.

IDUB "Interdisciplinary Research Grants"

This basic research competition is addressed to all researchers. The main objective of the competition is the cooperation of scientists from the University of Lodz who specialise in different fields and scientific disciplines. The application manager should be a person whose discipline is the leading one in the proposed project. The projects qualified for funding must be interdisciplinary in nature, and application for external funds will be one of the conditions for their settlement.
